Peter AB Widener was born in 1834 and died in 1915. He was an American businessman and art collector. Widener’s family tree is extensive and can be traced back several generations.
Widener was the son of a butcher and his wife, and he was born in Philadelphia. He had a brother named William L. Widener, who also worked in business and was involved in horse racing.
Widener married Hannah Josephine Dunton in 1859, and they went on to have two children: George Dunton Widener and Eleanor Elkins Widener. George died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, along with his wife and young son. Eleanor married Fitz Eugene Dixon, Jr., a prominent businessman and philanthropist.
Widener's granddaughter, Eleanor Widener Dixon, married Joseph E. Widener II, who was the son of his nephew, Joseph E. Widener. Joseph E. Widener II became a well-known art collector, like his grandfather.
Widener's descendants have continued to be involved in business, art, and philanthropy. The Widener family has also made significant donations to institutions such as Harvard University and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
